A short picture story for young readers, from Sybil Wettasinghe's later series of children's books. The text is set in large letters across a small extent, pitched at primary school children who are reading on their own or close to it, and the pages carry colour illustrations throughout.
Wettasinghe is among the most familiar names in Sri Lankan children's publishing, an author and illustrator whose picture books in Sinhala and English have been read by generations of children on the island. Her work is recognisable for its drawing as much as its storytelling — village scenes, round-faced children, warm colour — and this title sits in that tradition.
The English edition is published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-established Sri Lankan house publishing in Sinhala and English. It will suit a child beginning to read independently, a parent or teacher reading aloud, and readers abroad with a connection to Sri Lanka who want their children to grow up with its stories and pictures.
