Ritigala is an ancient site set within a strict nature reserve of over 3,000 acres, rising across four peaks inside the boundaries of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. The ruins of a Buddhist monastery, along with rock inscriptions dating to the 1st century BCE, are spread across more than 50 acres of protected forest, making this one of the most significant archaeological areas in the country.
The site rewards those who come prepared to walk. Stone-slab promenades wind through dense jungle, connecting the monastery ruins, scattered caves and the varied flora and fauna that have made Ritigala a protected nature reserve. The atmosphere is notably quiet and the landscape largely unchanged, which adds to the sense of moving through a place that has been carefully conserved over many centuries.
