One title from M. D. Gunasena's Read & Colour series, which takes stories by Sybil Wettasinghe and presents them in a form children can colour in as they read. The text here is the story of Hay Harry, in English, with artwork left open for the child to fill in.
The idea behind the series is straightforward: a child who is reading a story and colouring its pictures at the same time is doing two things at once, and the publisher's intention is that the drawing practice and the reading practice support each other. It suits children who are at the stage of reading simple narrative on their own, or reading along with an adult, and who like having something to do with their hands.
Sybil Wettasinghe was a Sri Lankan writer and illustrator of books for children, and her stories have been read by generations of Sri Lankan families. Other titles in the Read & Colour range draw on her stories in the same way.
