This is a colouring book, published in Sinhala, drawn from Sybil Wettasinghe's story Achcharu Muttiya. It belongs to the Read and Colour series, in which her children's stories are reissued in a form that pairs the text with line artwork a child can fill in. The pictures and the story here are taken from the original book.
Sybil Wettasinghe wrote and illustrated children's books in Sinhala, and her drawings — round-faced village children, animals, household scenes — are familiar to generations of Sri Lankan readers. In this format a child reads the story first and then colours the artwork that goes with it, so the reading and the drawing are part of the same sitting rather than separate activities.
The text is entirely in Sinhala. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should know that there is no English translation in the book, so a reader or an adult who can read Sinhala aloud is needed to get the story across; the colouring pages themselves, of course, need no language at all.
It suits families raising children in Sinhala abroad, Sinhala language classes for young learners, and anyone who grew up with Wettasinghe's books and wants to pass them to a child in a form that invites the child to take part.
