A collection of Sinhala proverb stories compiled by the veteran journalist Sri Nimal Padmakumara. Its subject is the prastāva pirulu — the proverbial sayings and set phrases that give Sinhala much of its colour, and that allow something needing a paragraph of explanation to be said instead in a handful of words.
Each of the sayings gathered here comes with the story attached to it, which is how proverbs of this kind are usually carried from one generation to the next. The book also reaches beyond the page: a number of the stories in it can be listened to on a smartphone, so the printed text sits alongside an audio version of the same material.
The book is written entirely in Sinhala, including the proverbs themselves and the stories explaining them, so a reader will need Sinhala to use it. For buyers outside Sri Lanka, that is worth knowing before ordering. For Sinhala-speaking families living abroad, it is the kind of book that keeps an idiom alive in a household where the language is spoken at home but not on the street outside.
