Punchi Ayage Punchi Katha

From$1.00

A Sinhala-language picture story for young children, written by Lal Premanath De Mel and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so a reader who does not read the script will not be able to follow it unaided.

The book is aimed at families with a child who has just started school. The publisher suggests a parent read it first and then tell it to the child, which gives some sense of how it is meant to be used at home rather than handed over to be read alone.

The story follows a child who does not want to go to school and who, by the end, comes round to wanting to go. That small turn is the whole of the plot, and it is pitched at exactly the age when the question of school is a live one in a household.

M. D. Gunasena is a long-established Colombo publisher with a substantial list in Sinhala, including schoolbooks and children's titles, and this sits in that part of their catalogue. It will suit Sinhala-speaking families abroad looking for reading material in the language for children at the start of their schooling, and teachers or relatives buying for the same age group.
