Perani Sinhala Kathuwaru

From$2.00

A Sinhala-language account of ten writers of Sri Lanka's classical literature and the works they left behind. Kalpa Eranda takes each author in turn, setting out who they were and what they wrote, in plain, unadorned Sinhala rather than the scholarly register such material often attracts.

The classical Sinhala canon is usually encountered in school syllabuses or in academic editions with heavy commentary. This book sits elsewhere: it is an introduction, written for readers who want to know the shape of that older literature and the figures behind it without working through the primary texts first. The organising principle is biographical — author by author, with their compositions treated alongside them.

Published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, an established Sri Lankan house publishing in Sinhala and English.

Please note: the text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English translation or parallel text, and the titles and names discussed are given in Sinhala script. Readers will need working Sinhala to use it. For those who read the language, it offers a way into the older literary tradition that does not assume prior study, and it may suit students, teachers, and readers of the diaspora wanting a straightforward grounding in the classical authors.
