Pancha Maha Wadaya

From$5.00

An account, written in Sinhala, of the religious controversy that took shape in Sri Lanka under colonial rule. Its starting point is the position Buddhism was left in once foreign powers held the island: pushed to the margins of public life, while official patronage went to Christianity. Under those conditions, the book records, Buddhist people took up the Christian faith.

What the book sets out is the argumentative struggle mounted against that state of affairs — the disputation through which the Buddhist side answered the claims being made against it. T.S. Dharmabandu writes it as a narrative of that contest.

The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so a reader will need Sinhala to use it. It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-established Colombo house.

Of interest to readers following the religious history of colonial Ceylon, the Buddhist revival, and the public debates between Buddhist and Christian spokesmen that ran through that period.
