From$2.00

A children's story in Sinhala from Sybil Wettasinghe, published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so a reader outside Sri Lanka will need the language — or a Sinhala speaker to read it aloud — to follow it.

The tale is a small one, told the way a folk explanation is told. A cucumber and a cabbage go off together to bathe. While the cabbage is still undressing, the cucumber climbs straight into the water, and stays there until evening. That is why the cucumber turned out cold.

Sybil Wettasinghe was a Sri Lankan writer and illustrator of children's books, working in Sinhala, and her stories have been read by generations of children on the island. This one carries the simple cause-and-effect shape that young listeners take to easily, and the everyday kitchen vegetables at its centre are ones a Sri Lankan child meets at home every day.

Suited to reading aloud with small children, and to Sinhala-speaking families abroad who want their children reading stories from home in the language they were written in.
