Nalapana

From$1.02

A retelling in Sinhala of the Nalapana Jataka, one of the stories of the Bodhisatta's former lives collected in the Jataka tales. A wise monkey leader saves his troop from a fearsome demon and shows them how they may drink water in safety — the kind of story that is told to children for the example it sets.

The text is entirely in Sinhala. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should be clear on that before ordering: there is no English version of the story within these covers, and a reader will need Sinhala to follow it. It is written for young children, which in practice means a parent or teacher reading aloud, or a child who has begun reading Sinhala independently.

Sumana Saparamadu is the author. The publisher is M. D. Gunasena & Co., an established Colombo house whose list has long included children's books and school titles in Sinhala.

For families abroad keeping up a child's Sinhala, the Jataka stories are a natural place to start — short, narrative, and already familiar to most Sri Lankan households. This one takes a single tale and gives it a book of its own.
