About this experience
Skip the queue at Minneriya National Park gate with your entrance ticket and guided safari arranged in advance. A 4x4 open-top jeep, carrying a maximum of six passengers, picks you up free of charge from any location within 5km of the park gate and heads straight to the lake area, where wildlife concentrations are highest. Your driver doubles as your tracker, reading the terrain of open grassland, scrub, and reservoir margin that makes this park one of Sri Lanka's richest.
Minneriya is best known for the Gathering, when hundreds of wild elephants converge on the Minneriya Reservoir as the dry season exposes its grassy banks — herds of adults, adolescents, and calves grazing together across the open plain. The park also holds deer, monkeys, crocodiles, leopards, and abundant birdlife. The safari runs about three hours, with a water bottle per person included; children from age five are welcome.
