This is the published script of the stage play Makarata, written and directed by Chamika Hathlahawatte, a lecturer in drama and theatre arts at the University of Colombo. The text is in Sinhala throughout, with no English translation, so it will suit readers who read the language or who work with Sinhala-language theatre material.
At the State Drama Festival, Makarata took the award for best production, together with several further awards from the same festival. What is offered here is the playscript itself in book form, the written text behind that staging rather than an account of it.
Published scripts of contemporary Sinhala drama are of use to a particular kind of reader: students of theatre, directors and groups looking for material to stage, and anyone following the work of practitioners teaching and producing in Colombo today. If you read Sinhala and have an interest in modern Sri Lankan playwriting, this is a working text rather than a commentary on one.
