A children's story in Sinhala, written and illustrated by Sybil Wettasinghe. The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so it will suit readers of the language, families raising children bilingually abroad, or collectors of Sri Lankan children's literature who want the work as it was made.

The story takes its starting point from an old belief held among the elders: that it is inauspicious to look at the moon on a Saturday. Wettasinghe built a children's book around that piece of inherited folk caution, as she often did with the sayings, superstitions and village talk she grew up among.

As with her other books, the pictures are her own. Wettasinghe wrote and drew for children across a long working life in Sri Lanka, and her illustration style — soft, rounded figures and village settings — is recognisable to generations of Sinhala readers. Parents who grew up with her books will know what they are buying; for others, this is a straightforward way to put an original Sinhala picture book, by one of the island's own children's authors, into a child's hands.
