Mahadenamutta is a figure from Sinhala folk storytelling — the village know-all, forever surrounded by his band of pupils, forever arriving at the wrong answer with complete confidence. The tales told about him and his followers are among the ones Sri Lankan children grow up hearing, and they tend to stay with people long after childhood because the comedy in them is genuinely good.
This retelling is by V.D. De Lenarol, published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation alongside it, so a reader will need to be comfortable in the language. That makes it suited to Sinhala-speaking households abroad looking for familiar material for children, to parents keeping the stories alive in a second-language setting, and to anyone reading Sinhala who wants the folk tales in print rather than remembered.
