A boxed set of Sybil Wettasinghe's story books for young children, printed in large letters so that a child who is just beginning to read can manage the pages alone. Each book is filled with colour illustrations, and the set is sold together rather than title by title.
The text is in Sinhala throughout. There is no English in these books, so they suit households where a child is learning to read Sinhala, or families abroad keeping the language alive at home. The large type and the pictures carry much of the work for a reader at that stage, and the stories are short enough to be read in a sitting.
Sybil Wettasinghe wrote and illustrated for children in Sinhala over a long career, and her drawings — rounded figures, village scenes, strong flat colour — are familiar to generations of Sri Lankan readers. Many Sri Lankan parents buying this set will be handing on books they were read themselves.
