Louisa May Alcott's novel of the March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy — has stayed in print since the nineteenth century. It follows the family through a New England winter and the seasons after it, with their father away serving in the American Civil War and their mother, Marmee, holding the household together on very little. The sisters quarrel and make up, put on theatricals, take on work they would rather not, and form a friendship with Laurie, the boy next door. Jo, impatient with what is expected of a young woman, wants to write. Much of the book's hold on readers comes from how ordinary its crises are: a burnt manuscript, a borrowed dress, an illness, a proposal answered wrongly.
This English edition is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, an established Sri Lankan publishing house, as part of its Timeless Classics series, which issues well-known works of English literature for local readers.
A sensible choice for a reader meeting Alcott for the first time, and for anyone building a shelf of standard English fiction at home or for a school library.
