Phyllanthus niruri is a small annual herb that grows widely across tropical coastal regions, and in Sri Lanka it has a long presence in Ayurvedic tradition under its Sinhala name pitawakka. Lifetone's Pure Natural Phyllanthus niruri Tea is made from a single ingredient: dried whole herb granules of the plant, processed at low temperature under hygienic conditions to preserve the character of the herb. The result is a straightforward herbal infusion with no added ingredients, produced by a company registered under the Department of Ayurveda, Sri Lanka.
The manufacturing takes place at Killinochchi in northern Sri Lanka, a region where the herb grows in the coastal environment that suits it. The granules are packed into individual sachets — each sachet contains 1.5 grams of dried herb — and sealed into a kraft paper stand-up pouch with a zip-lock closure. The manufacturing facility holds ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System certification (Certificate No. 190325049402, accredited by UAF), a standard that applies HACCP principles across the food supply chain. The product is distributed in the United Kingdom by Possible Green Private Limited, Kingston Upon Thames.
Preparing the tea is straightforward. Place one sachet in a cup, pour freshly boiled water over it, and allow it to infuse for at least two minutes. Stir the bag and give it a gentle squeeze before removing it, which draws out the full flavour and colour of the herb. Once the pouch is opened, the remaining sachets should be transferred to an airtight container to keep them fresh.
Phyllanthus niruri belongs to the family Phyllanthaceae and is found across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is the same herb referred to in Ayurveda as bhumi amla, and known in English as gale of the wind. Phytochemical studies have identified compounds including lignans, flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids in the plant. It is worth noting that taxonomic distinction within the Phyllanthus genus can be difficult in trade, as closely related species share common names; the packaging identifies the ingredient as Phyllanthus niruri.
The nutrients declared on the pack are carbohydrates, protein, and fat, along with the minerals calcium and phosphorus. No caffeine is declared on the packaging. Pregnant or lactating mothers, children, and anyone undergoing medication or surgery should consult their doctor before use. This product is available as a single 20-sachet pouch, in multipacks, and in a larger 60-sachet format.
