The Dandu Beraya is a traditional Sri Lankan drum carved from a length of bamboo, closed at both nodes and left in its natural, unpainted state. Unlike most drums from the island, it carries no animal hide stretched across its body. The sound instead comes from the wood itself, drawn out through a long carved slit cut along the tube, giving the instrument a distinct, resonant voice that owes nothing to skin or membrane.

This 12 inch version is a single bamboo tube fitted with a green cord threaded through holes near one end, forming a loop by which the drum is tied around the waist. Played this way, it leaves the drummer free to move, which suits its traditional role: the Dandu Beraya was carried by farmers who beat it to drive off animals threatening their crops, and it has long accompanied folk dances and served as a means of communication between villages. The name itself comes from the Sanskrit 'danda', meaning wood, a fitting root for an instrument defined by its timber rather than its hide.

It is played with two sticks of Atteriya wood, each between eight and twelve inches long, struck against the carved slit to bring out the tone. Some presentations of this drum include a pair of thin cane strips alongside the tube, which serve this purpose. Every drum is handcrafted, the work of craftsmen who continue a tradition of instrument-making that has been part of Sri Lankan ritual and rural life for centuries.

As a piece for display or for play, it carries its history plainly: the hollowed bamboo body, the carved sound slit, the waist cord, all visible and all functional rather than decorative. It suits anyone drawn to traditional instruments, to Sri Lankan craft, or simply to an object with a clear and unusual way of making sound.
