Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon with poor luck at sea, is wrecked, marooned and set adrift in turn, and each misfortune lands him among a people who hold a distorting mirror up to his own. In Lilliput he is a giant pinned down by a court obsessed with ceremony and faction. In Brobdingnag the proportions reverse and he becomes a curiosity in the palm of a hand. Later voyages take him to a flying island of abstracted projectors and, at last, to a country where rational horses keep filthy human-shaped beasts. Swift wrote it as a traveller's tale and as satire, and the two have never come apart: the comedy of scale carries an argument about politics, learning, pride and what human beings look like when they are measured against something else.
Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish satirist and clergyman, Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, and the book remains the work most readers meet him through.
