Great Stories

From$1.13

This is a children's book in Sinhala, written throughout in that language, with no English text. Readers who do not read Sinhala will not be able to use it.

It belongs to the Great Stories series and carries the Sinhala title Apē Raṭē Katuvaru — writers of our country. The book gathers the life stories of six Sri Lankan writers: Kumaratunga Munidasa, Martin Wickramasinghe, Chandraratna Manawasinghe, K. Jayatilaka, Sybil Wettasinghe and Mahagama Sekera. Each is presented as a biography for young readers, following the course of the writer's life rather than analysing the work.

The pages are in colour, and the writing is pitched at a child's level of reading. The publisher's intention for the series is plainly stated: these are lives offered to children as examples, with the emphasis falling on self-belief, determination, creativity, persistence in the face of difficulty, and ambition for the future. The six figures were chosen as writers who shaped Sinhala literary life, and the book sets their stories side by side.

Compiled by Thanuja Krishil Nirmalee and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, an established Sinhala and English language publisher. It suits Sinhala-reading children at home or in school, and families abroad who want their children reading about Sri Lankan writers in Sinhala.
