One title in the First Explorer Series, an early learning collection from M. D. Gunasena & Co. made for children aged two and above. The books in the series each take a single first concept and present it through colourful, child-friendly illustrations, with the aim of building vocabulary, observation skills and confidence in a child who is only beginning to name the world. This is the birds title.
Books of this kind are made to be looked at together rather than read alone. The illustration carries the work, and an adult sitting alongside supplies the words, the pointing and the repetition. For a very young child, the pleasure is in recognition — seeing a shape on the page and matching it to something glimpsed outside.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. is an established Colombo publisher, and this edition is in English. It suits parents and grandparents building a first shelf for a toddler, nursery and playgroup collections, and families abroad who want books for small children produced in Sri Lanka. It also makes a straightforward gift for a first or second birthday, where a sturdy, brightly illustrated picture book is usually more welcome than anything with much text in it.
