A collection of articles by Ruchira Surangee De Alwis that first appeared as a weekly series in the Sinhala newspaper Lakbima, gathered here in book form.
The writing follows a girl growing up with parents who had separated in law, and describes how she faced the various sorrows and difficulties that came to her. The material is autobiographical: everything set down in the book is drawn from the author's own experience rather than invented. The pieces are addressed in particular to women who find themselves tempted into quick decisions when life turns difficult, and the author offers her account as something to hold on to.
Because the book began as newspaper instalments, it reads in short self-contained sections rather than as a continuous narrative, each piece written for a weekly readership.
Please note that this book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text, and no parallel translation. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should be comfortable reading Sinhala prose before ordering. It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, an established Colombo publisher issuing titles in Sinhala and English.
It will suit readers of Sinhala personal memoir and newspaper column writing, and anyone following contemporary Sri Lankan women's life writing. Readers abroad who grew up with the Sunday and weekly Sinhala papers may already know the series.
