Deities and Demons Magic and Masks (Part I)

From$4.66

Dr Nandadeva Wijesekera was a Sri Lankan anthropologist and archaeologist who served as Commissioner of Archaeology in Ceylon, and who wrote across a long career on the island's people, its dance and its material and ritual culture. This is a work of that scholarly tradition — a study of Sri Lankan folk religion and its ritual paraphernalia, approached through the deities and demons of popular belief, the practices of magic, and the carved masks associated with them.

As the designation "Part I" indicates, the study was issued in more than one part, and this volume is the first of them.

It is written in English, so no Sinhala is needed to read it. That makes it useful to readers abroad who want a Sri Lankan scholar's own account of these traditions rather than a secondary summary written elsewhere.

Likely readers include students of anthropology and religion, people researching Sinhala ritual practice, collectors and museum visitors who have encountered Sri Lankan masks and want the belief system behind them, and general readers with a serious interest in the island's folk culture. Published by Godage International Publishers, a Colombo house issuing academic and general titles in Sinhala and English.
