Dickens's novel is told by David Copperfield himself, looking back over his own life from a childhood in Suffolk to his making as a writer in London. He loses his mother to the cold discipline of his stepfather, Mr Murdstone, is sent to work while still a boy, and runs away to an aunt, Betsey Trotwood, who has no particular wish to be found. Around him move some of the most recognisable figures Dickens drew: the Peggottys and their upturned boat at Yarmouth, the perpetually embarrassed and perpetually hopeful Mr Micawber, the dangerous charm of Steerforth, and the writhing, calculating Uriah Heep. Dickens himself wrote that of all his books, this was the one he liked best.
