You sit down in a working craft workshop in Sigiriya, where coconut shell is the raw material and an experienced artisan works alongside you. Everything you handle comes from locally sourced materials, and the shaping is done with your own hands rather than watched from a chair. Whatever you make at the bench is yours to keep, so you leave with a piece that carries the marks of your own work rather than something bought off a shelf.
Groups stay small, which means the artisan stands with you rather than addressing a crowd. You get step-by-step guidance from the first shell to the finished piece, and you stay hands-on the whole way through, with the artisan stepping in when a step needs demonstrating. Ceylon tea, served in a coconut shell, closes the session and gives you a few minutes to look over what you have made and talk with the person who taught you.
The workshop runs 30 minutes in total and is priced per person at a flat rate for one to eight guests, so the cost per traveller stays the same whether you come alone or with a group.
