A retelling of the old French fairy tale for young readers, written in English by Priyangwada Perera and illustrated throughout. The story of the merchant's daughter who takes her father's place in the Beast's castle has been reworked here in simple, direct prose intended to be read aloud to a child or read alone by one who has begun managing a book without help.
It belongs to M. D. Gunasena's fairy tale series, in which familiar stories are retold afresh and paired with colour pictures. The series was put together with gift-giving in mind — the sort of book handed to a child at a birthday or kept on a shelf and returned to.
