Awurudu Kema

From$2.00

A short Sinhala story built around a single Avurudu morning mishap. Silin Appu, a village man, rises at three o'clock to light the hearth at the auspicious time for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year — and at that very moment every firecracker stored up on the smoke rack above the fire goes off at once.

Sybil Wettasinghe is a Sri Lankan writer and illustrator of children's books, and this title comes from her long association with the Colombo publisher M. D. Gunasena & Co., which publishes in Sinhala and English.

Please note that the text is in Sinhala throughout. There is no English translation within the book, so buyers outside Sri Lanka should be reading Sinhala, or buying for a child or family member who is — a point worth considering if the book is intended as a gift abroad.
