A collection of column pieces by Suharshini Dharmarathna, a poet who here turns to prose to set down the story of her own life. Some of the columns appeared in the Mawbima newspaper; many were not published before and reach print for the first time in this gathering. Together they form a single book rather than a scattering of occasional writing.
The material is autobiographical in shape — the author's own life, told in the form of short columns — with social commentary running underneath it. That double register, personal account on the surface and observation of the society around her beneath, is what holds the pieces together.
The book is written entirely in Sinhala, and readers should be comfortable reading Sinhala prose to make use of it. There is no English text. It is published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd.
Of interest to readers who follow Sinhala column writing and personal essays, and to anyone collecting contemporary Sinhala literary non-fiction by women writers.
