Aparadhaya Saha Danduwama 2

From$7.00

This is the second part of Dedigama V. Rodrigo's Sinhala translation of Crime and Punishment, Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel of a destitute student in St Petersburg and the murder he commits. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so a reader will need the language to use it.

Dostoevsky's novel follows Raskolnikov, a student living in poverty, through the mental anguish and moral dilemmas that surround his killing of a pawnbroker. Driven by frustrated hopes and by a belief in his own superiority, he justifies the crime to himself as a means of doing good for society. What follows is guilt and confusion, and a deep internal conflict. The novel works through morality, justice, redemption, and the human capacity to suffer.

Dedigama V. Rodrigo is the translator. His rendering of the novel had appeared previously under other publishing houses; it is issued here by M. D. Gunasena with the official permission of the Russian embassy. The translation was published in two parts, and this is the second of them — readers coming to the novel for the first time will want the first part as well.

M. D. Gunasena & Co. is an established Colombo publisher and bookseller, issuing titles in Sinhala and English. This volume will suit Sinhala readers who want Dostoevsky in their own language rather than in English translation, and readers abroad building a collection of Sinhala literary translation.
