This is the Sinhala translation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, made by Dedigama V. Rodrigo. The whole text is in Sinhala — an international buyer who does not read the language should know that before ordering.
Dostoevsky's novel follows Raskolnikov, an impoverished student in St Petersburg, through his mental torment and his moral dilemmas. Driven by frustrated hopes and by a belief in his own superiority, he murders a pawnbroker and justifies the killing to himself as a means of doing some good for society. What follows is guilt and confusion, and a deep internal conflict. The book works through questions of morality, justice, redemption and the human capacity for suffering.
Dedigama V. Rodrigo is among the translators who brought Russian literature into Sinhala, and this rendering of Dostoevsky has appeared before under other publishing houses. It now comes from M. D. Gunasena, carrying the official permission of the Russian embassy. The translation is issued in two parts, and this volume is the first of them.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. is a long-established Colombo publisher and bookseller, publishing in Sinhala and English.
