A Sinhala novel by Yanusha Lakmali, set in the Sath Korale region of Sri Lanka and built around a line of local kings who ruled there before the arrival of the Portuguese. These rulers find no place in the Rajavaliya, the island's dynastic chronicle, but they survive in the folk tales of the area, and the temples, monasteries, tanks and sluices attributed to them still stand in ruin across the countryside. That gap between what the chronicles record and what the land and its storytellers remember is the ground the book works on.
The narrative moves between two periods, and the author separates them by the Sinhala she uses for each: the present-day strand is carried in the spoken idiom, the older story in the literary register. The whole runs across a long stretch of centuries.
The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so a reader will need Sinhala to follow it. Published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd. It will suit readers of Sinhala historical fiction, and anyone with an interest in the regional history and oral traditions of the North Western interior.
