One title from Animal Tales, a series of English-language children's books about animals that young readers are likely to have seen for themselves. This one is about the elephant.
The device the series uses is simple: the animal speaks for itself. Rather than describing the elephant from the outside, the book lets the elephant tell a reader about itself in plain, straightforward English. The descriptions are kept simple throughout, which suits children who are reading independently for the first time as well as those being read to.
At the end of the book there is a section setting out some important information about the animal, so a child who wants the plain facts after the story has them in one place.
