A short Sinhala book built around Andare, the court figure held to have lived at a Sri Lankan royal palace in times past. His stories have been told and retold for generations, and they work in two registers at once: they are funny, and they are pointed. The humour carries satire with it.
This title takes up one such story, Biri Hatana, from the Andare cycle. It is a slim book rather than a collection.
The text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English translation within it, so a reader needs Sinhala to use it. For Sri Lankan families abroad, it is the kind of book children meet early — the Andare tales are part of the common stock of Sinhala storytelling, passed down and read aloud as much as read alone.
