Step out of your Galle hotel and into a private, air-conditioned vehicle as your English-speaking chauffeur guide leads you through 7.5 hours of southern Sri Lanka's most rewarding sights. Begin at Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you walk cobblestoned streets still bearing their original Dutch names — past colonial ramparts, old churches, and boutique-lined lanes that tell four centuries of trading history.
From the fort, travel north to Madu River, where you board a boat and drift through dense mangrove channels that shade the water on both sides. 2 hours, animals all the way along. Monkeys, water lizards, a range of birds, bats.
