An abridged Sinhala translation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, prepared by Premasiri Mahingoda. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so it will suit readers who are comfortable in the language — anyone buying for an English-only reader should know that before ordering.
Stevenson, a Scottish novelist, built his story around a London lawyer, Gabriel John, who sets out to make sense of a set of strange events involving two men he knows: Dr Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde. The two could hardly be less alike in character, one decent and the other vicious, and the lawyer's enquiry turns on the connection between them.
The story gave English a phrase for a person who is good at one moment and bad at the next — a Jekyll and Hyde. Sinhala has its own expression for the same idea, the man who is Migel by day and Daniyel by night, which gives the translation a familiar footing for readers coming to Stevenson for the first time.
