Ebenezer Scrooge has made a virtue of saying no — to charity collectors, to his clerk's fire, to his nephew's invitation to dinner. On Christmas Eve the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley arrives in chains, and the spirits who follow take Scrooge back through his own life, out across London to houses keeping Christmas on very little, and forward to a grave that no one mourns. Dickens wrote it as a ghost story and the cold, the fog and the dread are all in it, but it ends in a change of heart that has kept the book in print and in the mouths of readers ever since.
This is the English text, issued by the Colombo publisher M. D. Gunasena & Co. as part of its Timeless Classics series, which brings out well-known works of fiction for general readers. It suits anyone meeting Dickens for the first time, as well as readers who return to the story each December.
