A Tamil-language workbook for Sinhala-medium pupils in their second school year, compiled to follow the revised national curriculum under which Tamil is taught to Sinhala-speaking children as the second national language. It is a practice book rather than a reader: material prepared for children at the stage where they are beginning to work with the Tamil script and with simple spoken forms.
The compiler, Udeni Rajapakse, teaches Tamil at Kingswood College in Kandy, and the book was prepared with the classroom requirements of that syllabus in mind.
Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note that the text is in Sinhala and Tamil throughout. There is no English in it. Instructions, headings and explanatory matter are given in Sinhala for the Sinhala-speaking learner, with the Tamil being taught set out in Tamil script. A reader who does not have Sinhala will not be able to follow the exercises unaided.
It will be of most use to Sri Lankan families abroad keeping a child in step with the home syllabus, to teachers of Tamil working with young Sinhala-speaking beginners, and to anyone studying how the second national language is introduced in Sri Lankan primary schooling.
