International Driving Permit (IDP)

An International Driving Permit (IDP) — sometimes called an International Driving Licence (IDL) — is a standardised document that translates the information on your national driver's licence into multiple languages. Issued by a recognised motoring authority or automobile association in your home country, it allows you to drive in participating foreign countries without sitting additional tests or navigating complex local permit procedures. Two international treaties govern IDP recognition. The 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic each establish their own IDP format. Is it better to self-drive or hire a driver in Sri Lanka?

Self-driving works well for experienced travellers who are comfortable with left-hand traffic, narrow roads, and assertive local driving styles. It offers flexibility — particularly useful when exploring less-visited areas or sticking to your own timetable.
