National Museum, Sri Lanka

Situated to the south of Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, the National Museum is one of Sri Lanka's most significant repositories of history and culture. Housed in an elegant colonial building, it holds a vast and absorbing collection of artefacts that trace the island's story from the prehistoric era all the way through to the colonial period.

The museum welcomes visitors daily, with the exception of Fridays, between 9 am and 5 pm. It is worth noting that phones and cameras are not permitted inside, so the experience is best approached with an open mind and a readiness to simply observe and absorb.
