Jetwing Kandy Gallery is a modern boutique hotel on a forested hillside above the Mahaweli River, about 8 kilometres east of central Kandy. It has an infinity pool facing the valley and a butler for every room. Jetwing designed it to bring Kandyan heritage into a contemporary building, with Kandyan motifs on the walls, wide glass balconies and solar panels on the roofs, and it makes a quieter alternative to staying in the busy town.
Every room has individual air-conditioning, a 40-inch television, a minibar, an Illy coffee machine, an electronic safe, Link Natural toiletries, free Wi-Fi and personal butler service, with 24-hour room service. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Jetwing designs both suites for two adults; our rates allow a third adult, or two adults with children, in either suite if you tell us when you book. The hotel also has rooms adapted for wheelchair users, with ramps and lifts in the public areas.
Riverscape, the main restaurant, looks out over the Mahaweli and the gardens and serves local and international dishes with a Sri Lankan twist at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a small private dining room and a bar alongside. Jetwing also offers an Authentically Sri Lankan menu and signature dining experiences at the hotel.
The infinity pool overlooking the river is the centrepiece, with loungers and parasols on a broad timber deck below the open lobby. The spa offers Balinese-style treatments, massages and couples' rituals, and the hotel lends binoculars for nature and birdwatching walks on its wooded hillside.
The Mahaweli, Sri Lanka's longest river, flows below the hotel. The centre of Kandy, with the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake and the evening cultural show, is about 8 kilometres away in a straight line. On the far side of town are the Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya and the three medieval temples that Jetwing recommends as a half-day tour: Embekke, Gadaladeniya and Lankatilaka. Also east of the town, the cave temple of Degaldoruwa is known for its Kandyan-period paintings, and the road east leads towards the Victoria reservoir and the hiking country of the Knuckles range.
The hotel is about 92 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the road climbs into the hills for the last part of the journey, so allow several hours. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Kandy Gallery, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples and families who want a calm, modern hotel with a good pool and river views within reach of Kandy's sights, rather than a room in the town itself; you will need a car or a three-wheeler to go into town. Two nights gives you a day for the temple and town and another for Peradeniya or the old temples.
