Uchi

Vanaf€0.95

A children's story in Sinhala, built around a fox cub called Uchi and adapted from a Japanese folk tale. Prof. Kusuma Karunaratne wrote it in simple language, with the aim of encouraging affection for animals in young readers.

The text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English translation within the book, so a buyer outside Sri Lanka should expect to read it in Sinhala or to share it with a child who is learning the language. For Sri Lankan families abroad, that is often exactly the point: a short animal story is one of the easier ways to keep a young reader in contact with written Sinhala.

The author is Prof. Kusuma Karunaratne, a Sinhala academic and writer. Here she works in the register of simple storytelling for the very young rather than in scholarly prose, taking a folk tale from Japan and retelling it for Sinhala-speaking children.
