Saddharma Rathnawaliya

Vanaf€11.65

The title translates roughly as a strand strung with the jewels of the Dhamma, and the work belongs to the Dambadeniya period of Sinhala letters. It was composed by the monk Dharmasena Thera.

The text is in Sinhala, and this edition is printed in Sinhala throughout. There is no English translation or parallel text here, so a reader will need to be comfortable reading the language. That said, the prose of the original is known for its plainness: Dharmasena Thera wrote in a register intended to be followed by the learned and the unlettered alike, rather than in the ornate literary Sinhala of some of his contemporaries. It is one of the reasons the work has held its readership across centuries, and why it has been read by Buddhists and non-Buddhists both.

This is a classical religious text rather than a modern study of one, and buyers abroad usually want it for one of two reasons — as a devotional and literary work read in its own right, or as a set text for those studying Sinhala prose and the Buddhist literature of mediaeval Sri Lanka. It is issued by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-established Colombo publishing house.
