A village children's story about a jackal living in the forest. Blue liquid spills onto him, and with his new colouring he begins to behave like some strange, unfamiliar creature — frightening the other animals of the forest as he goes.

The tale belongs to a familiar strand of Sinhala folk storytelling, in which an animal is transformed by accident and the forest must work out what to make of him. It is told simply, for young readers and for reading aloud to children who are not yet reading on their own.

Sybil Wettasinghe wrote and illustrated children's books in Sinhala over a long career, and her work is part of how several generations of Sri Lankan children first met books. Her stories are drawn from village life and village speech, and they carry her own drawing style alongside the text.

Please note that the text is in Sinhala. There is no English text in this book, so a reader will need Sinhala to follow the story — though the pictures carry a good deal of it, and the book is often bought by families abroad who want their children reading in the language at home.

Published by M. D. Gunasena & Co., an established Colombo house publishing in Sinhala and English.
