Dhammapada Wiwaranaya

Vanaf€10.78

An exposition of the Dhammapada by Moragalle Siri Gnanobhasa Thissa Thero, written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text and no parallel translation, so this is a book for readers who are comfortable reading Sinhala prose.

The Dhammapada is the collection in which the Buddha's teaching, given for the wellbeing of beings, is gathered in verse form. As the publisher puts it, every verse of it teaches matters that serve a person's good fortune in this world and the next. The word wiwaranaya signals the approach here: rather than presenting the verses alone, the author sets out their meaning for the reader.

Books of this kind occupy a settled place in Sinhala Buddhist reading, used alongside temple study, Dhamma classes and private devotional reading at home. A Sinhala exposition of the Dhammapada by a member of the Sangha is read both for the verses themselves and for the explanation that accompanies them.

It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-established Colombo publishing and bookselling house that issues titles in Sinhala and English. The likely buyer outside Sri Lanka is a Sinhala-reading member of the diaspora, a temple or Dhamma school library abroad, or a student of Buddhism who reads Sinhala and wants the commentary rather than an English rendering.
