A Sinhala novel by Shanthi Dissanayake, published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. The text is in Sinhala throughout, so reading it requires Sinhala; buyers ordering from outside Sri Lanka should know that before adding it to a basket.
The title word means an abyss, a drop with no floor to it, and that image governs the book. The narrative runs along the line of a love story, and the love story does not end happily. It closes the way something falls into a bottomless pit. Even if the two were to meet again at some point in the future, what they would see in front of them at that moment is the same thing: a world that is itself an abyss without a bottom.
Dissanayake uses that story to look at life from an angle of society that generally goes unseen, and the novel is an attempt to set that truth in front of the reader rather than to resolve it. Readers who want a reconciling ending will not find one here; the force of the book is in the fall.
For readers of contemporary Sinhala fiction, and for Sri Lankans abroad keeping up with writing from home.
