Question 1

What is Zeuxine regia?

Accepted Answer

Zeuxine regia is a small terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, native to parts of South and Southeast Asia including Sri Lanka. It grows on the forest floor in moist, shaded conditions and is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where can Zeuxine regia be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It typically occurs in humid lowland and mid-elevation forests within Sri Lanka's wet zone, favouring shaded spots with humus-rich soil. Protected forest areas such as Sinharaja provide suitable habitat, though the plant is inconspicuous and easily missed without a trained eye.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Zeuxine regia?

Accepted Answer

Zeuxine regia is recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue, indicating documented relevance within indigenous healing traditions. Specific therapeutic applications should be verified with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, as traditional uses do not substitute for clinical medical advice.

Question 4

Is Zeuxine regia a rare or endangered plant?

Accepted Answer

Terrestrial orchids are generally sensitive to habitat disturbance because they depend on specific mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. While the conservation status of this particular species in Sri Lanka requires verification from current national assessments, wild collection of orchids is regulated under national law.

Question 5

How many orchid species are found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka hosts several hundred orchid species, with a significant proportion being endemic to the island. They span terrestrial and epiphytic forms across habitats ranging from lowland rainforest to montane cloud forest.

Question 6

Can I see medicinal plants like Zeuxine regia on a tour in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes — specialist guided nature walks, Ayurvedic herb gardens, and ethnobotany-focused itineraries can include encounters with Sri Lanka's medicinal flora. A knowledgeable local guide significantly improves the chance of spotting inconspicuous species like terrestrial orchids in the field.

Question 7

How does Sri Lanka protect its medicinal plant heritage?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains government-administered catalogues of Ayurvedic plants and regulates the collection of wild species through flora and fauna protection legislation. Research institutes under the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine carry out ongoing documentation and standardisation work.
