Question 1

What is Vatica obscura?

Accepted Answer

Vatica obscura is a tropical tree species belonging to the family Dipterocarpaceae, native to Sri Lanka. It is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, valued for properties associated with its resin and bark within traditional healing systems.

Question 2

What family does Vatica obscura belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family, a group of resinous tropical trees widespread across South and Southeast Asia. This family is well represented in Sri Lanka's wet zone rainforests and includes several species with documented traditional uses.

Question 3

Where is Vatica obscura found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with Sri Lanka's wet zone tropical forests, particularly in the south-western lowlands where rainfall is high and humidity is sustained year-round. Protected areas such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve represent suitable habitat for dipterocarp species of this kind.

Question 4

What are the traditional medicinal uses of Vatica obscura?

Accepted Answer

Within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, dipterocarps have been used for their resins and bark extracts, with documented applications in related species including wound care, skin conditions, and anti-inflammatory preparations. Vatica obscura is considered a specialist ingredient used by knowledgeable traditional practitioners rather than a common household remedy.

Question 5

Is Vatica obscura endangered or threatened?

Accepted Answer

While Vatica obscura is not among the most widely studied species, Sri Lanka's wet zone forest trees face ongoing pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation. The broader conservation of wet zone forests, where this species grows, is a priority for Sri Lanka's environmental agencies.

Question 6

Can I see Vatica obscura in a botanical garden in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy maintains extensive collections of native Sri Lankan trees and may offer an accessible introduction to the island's dipterocarp species. Herbal gardens at Ayurvedic centres across the country also sometimes display plants from the official medicinal catalogue.

Question 7

How does Vatica obscura relate to Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia draws on hundreds of native plants, with Vatica obscura listed as one of the forest-sourced species recognised for medicinal value. Its inclusion reflects the deep integration of forest ecology and traditional medicine in Sri Lankan culture, a tradition maintained through both institutional practice and community knowledge.
