Question 1

Where exactly is the Urumale Lighthouse in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Urumale Lighthouse is located along the north-western coast of Sri Lanka, near the small coastal town of Iranawila, between Negombo and Chilaw. It sits close to the shoreline and the lagoon systems that characterise this stretch of coast. The area is approximately 60–70 km north of Colombo.

Question 2

Can you visit inside the Urumale Lighthouse?

Accepted Answer

The Urumale Lighthouse is an active navigational structure and is generally not open for interior public visits. Most visitors come to appreciate the coastal setting, the exterior of the lighthouse, and the surrounding fishing village atmosphere. It is best approached as a scenic stop rather than a formal tourist attraction with ticketed access.

Question 3

How far is Urumale Lighthouse from Negombo?

Accepted Answer

Urumale and the Iranawila coastal area are roughly 20–30 km north of Negombo along the coastal road. The drive typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on road conditions. Negombo makes a practical base for a day trip to this part of the coast.

Question 4

What is the best time of year to visit the Urumale coast?

Accepted Answer

The north-western coast is most pleasant between November and April, during Sri Lanka's north-east monsoon season when the south-west coast receives rainfall but the west coast remains relatively dry. Seas are calmer and fishing activity is at its most active and photogenic during these months.

Question 5

Are there other attractions near the Urumale Lighthouse?

Accepted Answer

Nearby points of interest include the Iranawila Rajamaha Viharaya, the lagoon and wetland habitats suited to birdwatching, and the broader coastal road toward Chilaw. Further south, the Madu Ganga wetland and Negombo's famous fish market are both accessible on a longer day itinerary.

Question 6

Is Urumale suitable as a day trip from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the drive from Colombo to the Urumale area typically takes around 90 minutes to two hours. It works well as a half-day or full-day excursion, especially when combined with stops at Iranawila village, the local coastline, and the nearby Negombo area on the return journey. A private vehicle is the most comfortable way to make the trip.

Question 7

What kind of wildlife can I see near the Urumale Lighthouse?

Accepted Answer

The lagoons and estuaries around the Urumale and Iranawila coastline support a variety of wading birds, including species such as herons, egrets, and kingfishers. The area is not a protected reserve but the undeveloped nature of the coast means wildlife encounters are relatively common compared to more built-up beach destinations.
