Question 1

What is Trichodesma zeylanicum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Trichodesma zeylanicum has traditionally been used in preparations addressing skin complaints, inflammation, and urinary conditions. Different parts of the plant, including roots, leaves, and seeds, are used depending on the formulation. Any use of the plant medicinally should be supervised by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Trichodesma zeylanicum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most commonly found in the dry zone lowlands, typically on disturbed ground, roadsides, and scrubland with well-drained soils. The North Central and Northern provinces are among its typical habitats. It thrives in open, sun-exposed environments and tolerates the long dry seasons of the low-country dry zone.

Question 3

Is Trichodesma zeylanicum safe to use at home?

Accepted Answer

Trichodesma species contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, compounds that can be harmful if used incorrectly or in excessive quantities. Traditional use has always been guided by trained practitioners. It is strongly advisable to consult a licensed Ayurvedic physician before using any preparation containing this plant.

Question 4

What family does Trichodesma zeylanicum belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Boraginaceae family, a large group of flowering plants that includes many rough-leaved, bristly herbs. The genus Trichodesma includes around 40 species distributed across Africa, Asia, and Australia, with T. zeylanicum being closely associated with Sri Lanka and the broader South Asian region.

Question 5

Why is the species called zeylanicum?

Accepted Answer

The epithet zeylanicum derives from Zeylana or Zeylan, historical European names for Ceylon — the name used for Sri Lanka during the colonial period. It indicates that Sri Lanka was the locality associated with the plant when it was first formally described by Western botanists.

Question 6

How many medicinal plants are in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains a pharmacopoeia documenting several hundred medicinal plant species found on the island. The catalogue reflects both pan-South-Asian Ayurvedic knowledge and uniquely Sri Lankan healing traditions passed down through generations of traditional physicians.

Question 7

Can visitors to Sri Lanka learn about Ayurvedic plants?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a number of Ayurvedic wellness centres, herbal gardens, and village-based experiences across the island offer guided introductions to Sri Lanka's medicinal plant traditions. Central and dry zone regions in particular have herbal gardens where species like Trichodesma zeylanicum can sometimes be identified in their natural context.
