Question 1

What is Saccharum spontaneum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurveda, Saccharum spontaneum — known as Kasha — is primarily used as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent. It is one of the ten plants in the classical dashmoola formulation, where its roots are combined with those of other species to treat inflammatory conditions, fever, and urinary ailments.

Question 2

Is Saccharum spontaneum the same as sugarcane?

Accepted Answer

No, it is a distinct wild species and the ancestor of cultivated sugarcane rather than sugarcane itself. Saccharum spontaneum is not grown commercially for sugar; it is a perennial grass valued in traditional medicine and for its soil-stabilising properties in the wild.

Question 3

What does Saccharum spontaneum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a tall grass, growing between one and four metres, with narrow, sharply serrated leaves and a large, silky silvery-white plume inflorescence. The flowering panicles are particularly visible from late monsoon through the early dry season, when they sway conspicuously above the surrounding vegetation.

Question 4

Where can Saccharum spontaneum be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is widespread across Sri Lanka, appearing in both dry and wet zones. It grows commonly along riverbanks, tank bunds, roadsides, and degraded scrubland. Dry-zone districts like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa support particularly dense stands along irrigation channels.

Question 5

Is Saccharum spontaneum invasive in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Within its native range, including Sri Lanka, the grass is a natural component of grassland and riverine ecosystems. It can colonise disturbed ground aggressively, which raises management considerations in some conservation areas, but it is not formally listed as an invasive alien species in Sri Lanka.

Question 6

What are the main compounds found in Saccharum spontaneum?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids in Saccharum spontaneum. These are broadly consistent with the anti-inflammatory and diuretic activities described in traditional Ayurvedic texts, though clinical evidence in modern pharmacology is still developing.

Question 7

How is Saccharum spontaneum prepared as a medicine in traditional practice?

Accepted Answer

The roots and rhizomes are typically cleaned, dried, and then prepared as a decoction by simmering in water. This decoction is administered orally in traditional practice. The plant may also feature as one component in multi-herb Ayurvedic compound formulations rather than being used as a standalone remedy.
